What’s up peeps!!! My name is Johnno, my loved ones call me The Rhino. I am a Reno based DJ, whose love for mixing traces back to when I was a child. I would splice wires of two walk-mans together and make hip hop mix-tapes. Late 90’s Kansas was where I was first introduced to the rave scene and electronic music. It was there in the mid-west, where I found my true passion was mixing electronic music. Shortly after discovering my passion, I dj’d my first rave in an abandoned military armory on the Ft. Riley military base, Ft. Riley, KS in 1999.
Before Kansas my first DJ mentor was a man whom I played football with at Oregon State University. A hip hop dj, I will forever remember him djing at the “Top of the Cock”, the only dance bar in town called the Peacock. But my true dj mentor was DJ Slade, a hip-hop and house DJ from Salina, Kansas. The true master of the wheels of steel!!!! He was the master who taught me the ropes of beat-matching, scratching and programing. And well…. Here I am today! the Rhino!
I have come a long way since then, now frequently playing gigs across the west coast, as well as hosting our own parties and events in Reno. I have also been the resident DJ for Controlled Burn, a fire spinning Burning Man group, also based in Reno.
So Where did the name The Rhino come from? I have narcolepsy, a condition of excessive daytime sleepiness. My roommates would bring people over and warn them not to wake me – waking me was like waking a sleeping Rhinoceros. The name stuck, and it seemed only natural for me to use the name for my DJ antics.
